Alebrijes (Spanish pronunciation: [aleËÂÂÂÂβɾixes]): Brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures.
These whimsical, brightly colored wood carvings from Oaxaca are part of Mexico’s rich sculptural traditions and also the result of intercultural exchange. The Stanley has a collection of alebrijes that range in theme from realistic humans and animals to human/animal hybrids and fantasy creatures to full three-dimensional scenes.
Miriam Alarcón Avila will lead a workshop about the significance of alebrijes and participants will create their own. They will also be able to see examples from the Stanley's collection on exhibit in the 3rd floor Visual Laboratory.
Children and families, as well as University of Iowa students and community members are invited to attend.
